New EtherCAT singleturn and multiturn encoders in the robust Sendix design now complement the versatile Sendix absolut family from Kübler. Kübler is thus responding to the increasing importance of the new field bus generation with Ethernet technology.

The popularity of EtherCAT is based on its universal application possibilities in the field of industry and building automation. By using EtherCAT the user can profit in various areas. An continuous signal down to the field level, real-time capability as well as many additional advantages, such as Distributed Clock for real-time position detection and Hot Connect, lead in many applications to significant cost advantages, while at the same time offering improved productivity.

Sendix EtherCAT singleturn and multiturn encoders enable up-to-the-minute field bus performance in the application and work on the CAN over EtherCAT (CoE) principle. On top of this the devices offer numerous special functions such as temperature monitoring, recording the operating time as well as storing customer data in plain text, for example concerning the installation location.A further plus is the fast data availability with reduced loading on the bus and controller as well as the transmission of speed/velocity, acceleration or leaving of a working area - here the user himself decides which information is available in real-time (PDO mapping in the memory).

All parameters can be programmed via the bus, ensuring fast error-free start.
The resolution for the singleturn devices is 16 bit with a total resolution of 28 bit, and for multiturn devices up to 12 bit.The bus cover comes equipped with 3 x M12 connectors for fast, straightforward error-free connection. Sendix EtherCAT singleturn and multiturn encoders afford the highest safety thanks to the "Safety-LockTM" bearing construction. The interlocked bearings with their large bearing span ensure stability when subjected to vibration and impart a ruggedness that is forgiving even of installation errors.

This eliminates machine downtime and repairs. Thanks to Kübler’s highly integrative OptoASIC technology, the electronics and sensor optics are reduced to just a few components, with the consequent benefit of a higher degree of reliability. The solid die-cast housing with its IP 67 protection rating stays sealed, even when subjected to harsh everyday use, and offers a high level of security against failures in the field. The wide temperature range afforded by these devices, from -40°C up to +80°C, opens up a wide variety of applications without further cost.
Visual warning and alarm signals inform the customer of sensor faults, under-voltage or too high a temperature. Fault diagnosis is therefore much simpler, allowing the measures necessary to correct the problem to be taken without delay, so avoiding long machine downtimes

The 3650 and 3670 series from Kübler offer a resolution of 9 bit with SSI, 4.. 20mA or 0 ..10V output. There is a suitable measuring range (45°, 90°, 180° or 360°) for every application. The encoders are particularly robust, compact and versatile.

The non-contact magnetic measuring systems are not subject to wear and so offer a long service life and high reliability. The sturdy die-cast housing and the IP69K protection rating ensure the encoder remains sealed, even in the harshest environments, and offer the highest security against breakdowns in the field. Thanks to its wide temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and to an especially high resistance to humidity and condensation, the encoder is ideal for use outdoors, even with large fluctuations in temperature. Extremely high resistance to shock (>500g) and to vibration (>30g) guarantee that the encoders are better able to withstand difficult environmental conditions, thus avoiding machine stoppages and the need for repairs.

The compact design as well as a blind hollow shaft of up to 10mm means the encoders can be used where space is restricted and can be mounted on a tight radius even with large shafts.
A green LED for reference point detection facilitates start-up, whilst a red LED simplifies fault diagnostics during maintenance.

The new magnetic rings RI20 from Kübler, combined with the proven LIMES sensor head, offer a particularly compact incremental rotary measuring system, ideal for installation areas where space is very tight. With an installation depth of only 16mm the system is suitable for applications, where there is no more room even for miniature encoders. The non-contact technology means the system is particularly resistant to shock and vibration, whilst offering the additional advantage of total freedom from wear.

The solid housing and the high IP 67 protection rating allow for use in harsh environments. The system has an unbeatable price/performance ratio in applications with large shafts of up to 30mm and is completely unaffected by soiling caused by dust or fluids.

Resolutions of up to 1440 PPR and speeds of up to 15,000 RPM are possible. Push-pull or line-driver RS422 outputs are available.

The new Profibus encoders are available either as singleturn with up to 16 bit resolution or multiturn with up to 28 bit resolution, all offering up-to-the-minute fieldbus performance in the application thanks to the latest Profibus-DPV0 profile and enhanced programming possibilities. Encoder profiles Class 1 and Class 2 are supported.

These encoders are characterised by their particularly fast speed:

  • Fast data availability with reduced loading on the bus and controller, together with intelligent functions for rapid position detection and data provision to the Profibus.
  • Fast, simple, error-free connection, thanks to a bus terminal cover with optimised connection technology, including standard M12 connectors.
  • Fast start-up, thanks to a predefined GSD file, 3 diagnostic LEDs and a SET-key, as well as the simple parameter assignment of rotation direction, preset value ,diagnostic mode and a variety of scaling options for the number of steps per turn, the number of turns and the total resolution over singleturn/multiturn.

Galvanic isolation is provided by a DC/DC converter that is integrated in the bus stage.
In addition, the encoders boast the proven features common to all Sendix encoders: a high degree of robustness thanks to their rugged ‘Safety-LockTM Design’ bearing construction and their sturdy die-cast housing, a high level of reliability thanks to the mechanical gear (in the multiturn version) as well as OptoASIC technology with very high integration density (Chip-on-Board). Kübler is ringing in a new age of absolute encoders with the new Sendix product family. 

The absolute shaft and hollow shaft encoders, which are offered in singleturn (max. 17 Bit) and multiturn (max. 29 Bit) versions, are setting new standards in the market when it comes to rapidity, safety or versatility.  A real time SSI interface (with SIN/COS option) is available for transmitting position data, as well as the new all digital, bi-directional BiSS interface and various Fieldbus and Real Time Ethernet options within a short time .  

The multiturn component of the Sendix absolut series is based on a newly developed mechanical gear module in conjunction with a purely optical sensor technology.  It is completely resistant to magnetic fields - even strong magnetic fields, for example in the vicinity of brakes on geared motors, cause no interference to its function.  Moreover it was possible to develop a multiturn encoder with a mechanical gear, which for the first time in the industry-standard 58 mm format made possible a through hollow shaft up to 14 mm Ø (15 mm Ø with blind hollow shaft).  The encoders give warning or alarm signals concerning sensor error, too low voltage or too high temperature, either via the interface or optically with an LED.  These Condition-Monitoring data put an end to downtime in the field.  Real-time rapidity with the new Sendix absolute encoders is possible thanks to the efficient SSI interface, with clock frequencies up to 2 MHz or the ultra swift BiSS interface with max. 10 MHz.  Transmission of 26 Bit position data can be made in less than 5 μs.  A high refresh rate of the position value with jitter <1 µs makes it possible to achieve especially high precision in the application.  Devices that have the additional SIN/COS output option can be used for high-resolution feedback with very short control cycles, for example on gearless drives. 

The encoder can be reset to zero or to a desired position by using either a SET-key or via control inputs.  The stable die-cast housing and a protection rating of up to IP 67 ensure the devices remain unaffected by damp or by temperatures from  -40°C up to +90°C when used outdoors. The mechanical bearing construction with the new Safety-Lock (™) design tolerates mechanical installation errors to a great extent and guarantees high shock resistance (2500 m/s2, 6 ms) and increased resistance to vibration (100 m/s2, 10...2000 Hz). The practical modular system offers an undreamt of array of choices in application and connection with the minimum of time and expense.  Through hollow shafts up to 15mm, suitable fixing solutions and versatile connection technology are the key points.  M12 connection technology is available not only for Fieldbus and Ethernet but also for SSI and BISS interfaces.

The Fieldbus versions are available with bus cover (integrated fieldbus nodes) or as low-cost alternatives for direct connection to the controller (peer to peer), for example in automotive manufacture.  They come equipped with the latest communication protocols and profiles.  The CANopen® as well as the CAN lift interfaces will be available from Q3 2006, then from Q4 2006 Profibus und Industrial Ethernet, (Ethercat, further down the line).

With its so-called “bearing block” Kübler has developed a quite specific solution for prolonging the service life of encoders. 
The bearing block was designed for use especially in applications, where belts are used together with encoders. If the belt is stretched too tightly then the encoder bearings are soon overloaded, resulting in a substantial reduction in the service life of the encoder.  The bearing block - with its maximum bearing load of up to 600N - increases the maximum bearing load of the encoder several times over.  To achieve this the bearing function and the sensor component are separated.  The fixing dimensions are 100% compatible with most common encoders.  In this way even encoders that have already been installed can be retrofitted.  Installation is quite simple with no adaptation being necessary.  For systems where installation space is limited, there is a version for hollow shaft encoders - even when used with an absolute multiturn encoder an installation depth of just 70 mm is all that is required.

Kübler is setting new standards with its latest generation of incremental encoders.  These versatile devices deliver high performance and offer the customer a wide spectrum of use as per the slogan “more compact, more varied and more sophisticated”.  The user can address a wide variety of applications using just one type of encoder thus avoiding the extra costs associated with special versions. 
The encoders from the new SENDIX 5000 series are just 50mm in diameter and benefit from a compact design that means only limited mounting clearance is necessary.  At the same the profile of the flange matches 58mm devices in a ratio of 1:1.  The modular construction means the user can select just the right version for his particular application.  Production costs are thus reduced whilst performance is increased.  

This versatile modular system used in Kübler’s 5000 series offers the user even more benefits: plant and machine manufacturers now only require one incremental encoder range to meet a whole host of application requirements.  The new shaft and hollow shaft encoders can be modified in so many different ways that they can take care of almost every conceivable application.  There is no longer any need for expensive custom versions.  So, for example, the through hollow shaft version is designed for diameters of up to 15.87mm and not just for 12 or 14mm.  Moreover these new devices are available also in US standard sizes and with all the interfaces commonly used in the US market.  Neither is any requirement left unsatisfied when it comes to connection technology - the choice on offer includes competitively-priced M12 connectors, cables tailored to suit, M23 connectors and even MIL standard connectors.  In addition the user has a wide choice of options for fixing and mounting. 

Kübler’s 20 years of experience can be clearly seen in these new SENDIX 5000 series devices.  The extensive temperature range, from -40°C up to +85°C, addresses a wide range of applications where very low or fluctuating temperatures are to be found, as for example in vehicles.   Increased shock and vibration resistance values (2500m/s2, 6 ms and 100 m/s2,10...2000 Hz) as well as a radial load capacity of 80N - atypically high for this size of encoder - ensure safe operation and a long service life.  Even the through hollow shaft version with up to 15.87mm diameter is equipped with extremely sturdy bearings.  Here many traditional encoders have had to make do with thin bearings, which demonstrate a much reduced product life.    The high IP67 protection rating refers not just to the housing but to the whole encoder, so ensuring that the devices have the best defence against ingress of dirt ,dust particles and liquids.  Thanks to highly integrative opto-ASIC technology the electronics and optical sensing are reduced to just a few components, thus providing high immunity to EMC interference.  A fast electronic pulse frequency of 300 kHz means dynamic applications are not a problem.  Resolution is up to 3600 pulses per revolution.

Whether for controlling the speed and position of drives or for shaft copying or monitoring overspeed limiters, encoders are at the very heart of sensor technology in the world of lifts.   

In order to serve the particular requirements of lift engineering, Kübler has designed and implemented a comprehensive selection of products -  based on its very wide range of encoders -  with "plug & play" versions providing connectors with cables suitable for all current lift controls, so allowing simple error-free installation and servicing.  It is worth noting the long service life of the devices thanks to their high shock and vibration resistance, a high protection rating up to IP67 and a wide temperature range of -30°C to +85°C.  During installation their sturdy bearings, short-circuit proof outputs and reverse connection protection ensure they remain unaffected by external influences.

Kübler’s absolute multiturn encoders have won for themselves a market-leading position thanks to their top-class technical performances. Both the “Most compact multiturn encoder with through hollow shaft” as well as the “Multiturn encoder with the highest shock and vibration resistance” originate from the Kübler company. Now there is a new addition to this wide-ranging multiturn family: a simplified standardised version that makes access to multiturn technology easier for the user - from a financial aspect too.

The Standard Line offers everything that the majority of users in the automation industry require from a top-level device. This includes the high resolution of 12 x 13 Bit (8192 pulses per revolution and 4096 revolutions), speeds up to 6000 revolutions per minute as well as high pulse frequencies of up to 500 kHz. However these standard encoders from Kübler have even more to offer: their compact design (including shaft clamping) means only 40.5 mm clearance is needed, so defying even the tightest installation spaces. Despite their high level of reliability when used in an industrial environment, encoders are not basically immune to all the stresses and strains imposed on them. So, for example, the high precision opto-electronic measuring systems are sensitive to bearing currents.

Particularly at risk are encoders in large drives such as asynchronous motors and AC vector motors, used for example in mixers and agitators, grinders and plastic-film production plant. The bearing currents that occur here can cause lasting damage to the encoders. The current flowing over the housing of the antifriction bearings leads to the gradual destruction of the bearing races in the motor or encoder.

In order to counteract this Kübler has developed an insert that provides galvanic isolation between the encoder shaft and the motor shaft, preventing the current from flowing across the motor- and encoder bearings. To achieve the best results it is recommended that the tether arm be isolated too. To answer this need Kübler has designed isolated torque arms especially for this type of application and so, for a relatively small investment, the servicing intervals and life of the motor can now be considerably extended.

When encoders are used in environments, which are particularly prone to interference, then they need a connection system that ensures faultless data transfer even under adverse conditions. Kübler is therefore offering its new hybrid encoder cable so that potential troublemakers such as electromagnetic interference cannot disrupt or distort the signals from the encoder. This guarantees that the data to be transferred arrive safely and intact at their destination, even when long distances are involved.

The hybrid encoder cable exploits the advantages of fibre-optic technology in combination with the characteristics of a copper cable or connector. The electrical signal is converted in the connector into an optical signal and then transmitted for example using line driver (RS 422)- or even SSI-functionality. Flexible copper strands and optical fibres in the cable make for interference-free data transfer as well as a reliable power-supply via copper conductors.

The ingenious cable construction means that no special technical knowledge of fibre optics is required for connecting the cable - a major advantage for the user. Each cable matches the corresponding standard encoder plug and is connected just like traditional copper cables. No special cleaning of the connector is necessary, since there is no dirt build-up as in other fibre optic applications. Moreover the hybrid cable is 100 percent compatible with normal encoder cables.

The hybrid encoder cable can be used wherever there is a high degree of EMI pollution, such as can be found for example in the vicinity of high voltage installations and welding robots. Data can thus be transferred without interference over long runs of up to 1000 metres.

The cable is also the perfect answer in applications where the encoder has to be physically separated from the controller. Thanks to its heavy-duty outer jacket, the hybrid encoder cable remains unaffected by mechanical environmental conditions and thus benefits from increased reliability.

Kübler introduced the customer programmable absolute angle encoder; by means of a simple DIP switch on the unit the user can easily change from one predefined programme to another. Eight different customised configurations can be factory set. So for example, in an application such as tool changers quite varied divisions can be preconfigured over 360°, as well as strobe and parity checks.

The new angle encoder assigns an 8-bit output data word to each of 2048 positions over 360° and provides this as a parallel output. Up to 256 different output values are thus available. Depending on the programming the device can supply various combinations of incremental and absolute signals. Thanks to this function the new angle encoder is ideal for use in rotary indexing machines (e.g. for assembly, cleaning, blasting), where this technology can be applied. Further benefits for the user result from the minimal effort needed for assembly as well as the fact that the device can at any time easily be configured for the task in hand.

This new device is a singleturn absolute encoder. Its compact size of just 50mm, its rugged construction as well as its IP 67 protection all go to make for high performance in tight spaces and the most adverse conditions. The resolution is 11 bit per revolution with an update rate of 10 kHz.

Powerful, compact and rugged - this is how the new incremental encoders from Kübler can best be described.

Both the shaft encoder series 3610 as well as the hollow shaft series 3620 with through bore are perfectly suited for use in machine building, vehicles, lifts and conveyors as well as for servo and geared motors. A space-saving compact design construction allows for an ideal outside diameter of 36 mm for both incremental encoders. This means that both these newcomers from Kübler guarantee peak performance even in the tightest of spaces: pulse rates of up to 3600 ppr are possible at up to 12,000 rpm and with temperatures ranging from -30ºC up to +90ºC. Their high shock resistance ensures they are not affected by external influences.

With this new shaft encoder series 3610 and the hollow shaft encoder series 3620, Kübler has just expanded its economy encoder range by two high performance devices, both at very attractive prices. Powerful, compact and rugged - this is how the new incremental encoders from Kübler can best be described.

Both the shaft encoder series 3610 as well as the hollow shaft series 3620 with through bore are perfectly suited for use in machine building, vehicles, lifts and conveyors as well as for servo and geared motors. A space-saving compact design construction allows for an ideal outside diameter of 36 mm for both incremental encoders. This means that both these newcomers from Kübler guarantee peak performance even in the tightest of spaces: pulse rates of up to 3600 ppr are possible at up to 12,000 rpm and with temperatures ranging from -30ºC up to +90ºC. Their high shock resistance ensures they are not affected by external influences.

With this new shaft encoder series 3610 and the hollow shaft encoder series 3620, Kübler has just expanded its economy encoder range by two high performance devices, both at very attractive prices. In order to answer the individual demands of the user, the rugged metal housing is available with a new design variant: in the modular system the flange can be selected according to the relevant field service conditions. The outside shaft diameter can measure up to 6 mm and the hollow shaft can have a bore diameter up to 8 mm.

The new incremental encoders are based on the proven technology of the miniature encoder series 2400 and 2420, which even carry approvals for difficult railway applications. With IP65 protection and a chromated (chromium plated) housing that is resistant to the harmful effects

In the area of linear measuring technology, Kübler has just extended its wide range of draw-wire actuators with a new maxi draw wire that comes with up to 40 metres wire length. Kübler can now offer just the right draw wire solution for all conceivable standard lengths & distance measurements in machinery and plant construction. In conveying, handling and stage systems, draw-wire actuators are the preferred choice, where installation space is limited or where it is simpler to carry out the measurement directly on the moving part rather than for example on the drive shaft. Classic applications include scissor lifts, cranes or moving theatre stages.

The mechanical draw-wire encoders transform linear movements into rotary motion by winding/unwinding a wire. At the heart of the draw-wire encoder lies a drum mounted on bearings, onto which a steel or Paraleine wire is wound. The mechanical construction ensures that the wire is evenly wound onto the circumference of the drum. The traversing speed can be up to four metres per second. The dimensions of the drum (diameter and width) and the diameter of the wire determine the maximum length of the wire. Because of the construction, the measuring accuracy can only be defined precisely for the first layer that is wound on. The maximum available measuring range equates exactly to the maximum wire length that can be wound on the first layer.

Advantages for users of the Kübler draw-wire actuators include high repeatability as well as simple installation without the need for additional guidance systems. An extensive range of accessories such as guide-pulleys, extension wires and much more complements the wide choice of draw-wire actuators.
Encoders connected to the mechanism convert the rotary movements that occur into electrical signals. All Kübler draw-wire actuators can be used in combination with a wide variety of encoders, each of which however fits perfectly. This means all sorts of different interfaces are possible - from analogue outputs, through push-pull and SSI to interfaces for industrial Fieldbus systems such as for instance Profibus DP or CANopen®. The long life and reliability of all Kübler encoders are the result of their rugged construction, temperature and ageing compensation, short-circuit proof outputs and reverse polarity protection on the supply voltage input.

Kübler’s new A02H series of heavy duty incremental encoders with large hollow-shaft fills an important hole in the market.

Traditional heavy duty incremental encoders have tended to be large and cumbersome in design and often expensive to buy. Of course this type of special encoder can handle all the sorts of extreme applications you can think of; in practice however many applications with cranes, in drives in the steel industry or in general heavy machinery only require heavy duty encoders that offer a sensible compromise between the cost of purchase and the performance. The widespread practice of over-engineering needs to be kept in check. To achieve this goal many users up till now have been installing standard encoders with a large hollow shaft - with questionable success. These types of products are not designed for high loads on their bearings, shocks and high rotation speeds, so the rate of failure is unacceptably high.

Kübler’s new heavy duty encoders solve these problems. Their overall depth is up to 3 times shorter than traditional heavy duty devices, yet they are many times more robust than standard hollow shaft encoders. The user can thus save on expensive installation in or on drives and can avoid high failure rates. The new A02H series is a heavy duty hollow shaft encoder with a bore of up to 42 mm diameter. The overall depth however is a mere 50mm max. At the heart of the new family lies an ingenious mechanical construction, which avoids any axial displacement of the hollow shaft, caused for example by heavy axial impacts. This eliminates 90% of current encoder failures.


The high-grade stainless steel hub-shaft fixing has been balanced, which supports the high continuous rotating speed of up to 6000 rpm offered by this new family of encoders. All the devices come with UL approval as standard and can also be delivered in an explosion-proof version (zones 2 and 22). Resistance to shock is at least 200g/6ms. A wide range of mechanical accessories is available for fixing the encoders.

In addition the manufacturer also offers customized fixing solutions for special projects. As far as the electronics is concerned, the encoders are available either for 5 VDC with RS 422 output or for 10-30 VDC with push-pull output as well as with sinusoidal output with 1 Vss for either 5 VDC or 10-30 VDC supply.

The rugged miniature 2400/2420 series of encoders from Kübler now also meet the more stringent standards EN 50121-3-2 and EN 61326-1 (commonly referred to as the ’railway standards’). These tiny incremental devices, available in either shaft or hollow-shaft versions and measuring only 24mm outside diameter, exceed the standard requirements of the EMC guidelines 89/336/EWG and satisfy the highest demands.

Compared to the standards that apply elsewhere in normal industrial applications, rail applications have particular requirements as regards electromagnetic compatibility. The use of overhead power lines and modern power electronics cause interference emissions across a wide band that can particularly affect control electronics. As many functions have to do with safety, it is imperative that the sensors function correctly even in difficult EMC environments. During extensive testing excellent results were obtained from these miniature devices from Kübler and since then they have been installed for example in trains to monitor the position of the doors.

Thanks to the use of highly integrated opto ASICs, Kübler has succeeded in manufacturing the devices with the option of a shaft as an alternative to the hollow-shaft version. The IP 64 protected encoders offer particularly high EMC resistance with their maximum speed of up to 12,000 rpm.

This allows high resolutions and high continuous rotation with a maximum pulse frequency of 160 kHz. Connections are protected against reversed polarity and short-circuits. The built-in ageing compensation ensures that even after many years the device puts out signals that have a clear phase shift of 90 degrees. The normal operating temperature is from -20°C up to +85°C - in special cases the range can be extended down to -40 °C .

The chromated housing is resistant to oil and acids. A special strain-relief system that does not just rely on a standard cable grommet but in addition offers multiple 6-times clamping ensures particularly high strain-relief of the cable.

In addition to applications on the railways these miniature encoders can be used in pick and place machines (SMT robots), handling machines for electronic components, quality testing machines, laser and inkjet printers, medical technology, mail stuffing machines, labelling machines or for controlling the camera in pipe-inspection machines.

As with most Kübler encoders this encoder series benefits from UL approval.
