Open and bidirectional interface for drive technology.

The big advantage of the BiSS interface is an open source protocol for sensor, inverter and drive, which e.g. offers high speeds (data rate up to 10 MHz) and runtime compensation for optimal operation of the drive system. It is not a licensed interface that determines the choice of components, but the requirements of the applications alone, resulting in greater flexibility and greater cost efficiency.
  • BiSS is fully digital and bidirectional and is ideally suited as a motor feedback system for both linear and rotary axes.
  • BiSS is cost-effective and flexible because the interface is not proprietary. Therefore the selection of available products is much larger.
  • The inverters with existing RS422 and RS485 interfaces can usually be used with an extension with a firmware update for BiSS, thus opening up the possibility of an open source interface.
  • However, there is also the possibility of fast and easy BiSS Master implementation through free BiSS IP´s on processors and FPGA´s.
  • Benefits when commissioning the motor and inverter through plug-and-play due to the motor data and maintenance information that can be stored and read in the encoder as well as the possibility of setting the absolute measuring system to a predefined position value.
  • Information and evaluations about the entire system during operation through condition monitoring and through runtime compensation for accelerated communication, e.g. to minimize temperature-related drift effects.

BiSS Line uses standard components available on the market for cables and connectors and transmits the 8B10B coded BiSS data via RS485 PHYs in familiar 2- or 4-wire technology.

The transmission speed of 12.5 MBaud is comparatively high. Unique features are: Open source interface for single cable solution and bus structure for multiple slaves. However, it is essential to implement Forward Error Correction (FEC) as a prerequisite for high availability of data communication even via disturbed and inferior cable and connector connections.

BiSS Safety is completely based on BiSS-C and uses all protocol options. All identification features, electronic data sheets and diagnostic options are retained in full.

The following functionalities were assumed for the further development of BiSS for safety-relevant applications (BiSS Safety):

  • Achieving SIL2 and SIL3 with existing BiSS protocol
  • Maintaining all physical interfaces to use existing and new sensors
The outer structure remains a point-to-point wiring as with a standard BiSS protocol. Within the device, however, two independent sensors are used for generating the position data and securing the transmission. BiSS Safety uses the 'Black Channel' approach for safe data communication.
